One year after finishing school, a decisive majority (more than 80%) of Małopolska vocational school leavers were occupationally active: most of their number were working, and quite a number of them were continuing education. Regrettably, not all of them managed to find jobs – despite their efforts, 13% of them remained unemployed. It is to be noted, however, that a considerable proportion of unemployed school leavers were occupied during the period between leaving school and the time of the survey (being in employment or in further education). People continuously unemployed constituted 6% of the total figure, and the passive ones – 3%.

The aim of the analysis was to identify and define the geographical relations concerning both occupational education (commuting to schools), further education, as well as the passage of school leavers on to the labour market (first job, own business, unemployment, occupational passivity). The analysed relations comprised both the characteristics of relocations (permanent and seasonal, as well as daily commuting) and the impact of the place of residence on the educational and occupational success.

The analysis, authored by Robert Guzik and Krzysztof Wiedermann, has used the data collected during the second “Survey of vocational school leavers”, carried out by the Regional Labour Office in Kraków, as part of the Labour Market and Education Observatory of Małopolska project. The survey was done in 2012 (August–October) and its respondents were students of basic vocational, technical secondary and post-secondary schools in Małopolska.
